Standard II

Design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments.

Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating

contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge,

skills, and attitudes identified in the Standards.

  • Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity

  • Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress

  • Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources

  • Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching

Reflections & Artifacts

The second standard underlines the importance of teacher's consciousness towards the diversity among students. The application of technology tools in education encourages students to explore more by themselves. The online resources are abundant enough to satisfy the knowledge level requirements of different learners. The fact that students possess different learning styles requires teachers to prepare course materials and to design course activities in various formats. Self-paced assessments would help students be clearer with their progress, and meanwhile, teachers can adjust the teaching plan according to the results of assessments.

The first artifact is a web-based course I created for IT636. The name of the course is Designing Online/Hybrid Courses with Schoology. There are several technology tools embedded in the course, including YouTube videos, interactive quizzes, a Google Group discussion board, and free online multimedia creation programs. Learners are encouraged to view the materials and assess themselves with the activities provided in the site. Also, to show my ability to personalize learning materials for different learning styles, the two tutorials are listed below as the second and the third artifacts. Some students may learn best by simply reading the text information, but others may prefer moving scenes and audio clips. The standard requires teachers to be competent for satisfying the diverse requirements. I prepared two versions of the tutorial for the program named Seesaw. The first one is the pdf format of it while the second one is the video version. The forth artifact listed here is a course site created with Kompozer and uploaded to the USM Ocean platform. In the site, several formative and summative assessments are presented for learners to check their understandings towards each lesson. Also, the assessments applied various technologies to attract students and satisfy their differentiated learning needs.

future learning goals

Since the requirements in the standard underlines the formative and summative assessments, in my future learning, I would pay more attention to how can the technology products help us with creating assessments. In my mind, because of the fact that learners are of various learning styles, their different performances in assessments are possibly influenced by their unique learning styles. Thus, I would apply various technologies in the design of assessment activities to meet the requirements and make sure that students showed their real potentials in the test. Besides, I would remind myself that the experiences gained from authentic learning context are significant data for the success of future teaching practices.
