Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in

a global and digital society.

  • Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations

  • Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success

  • Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats

  • Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning

Reflections & Artifacts

The third standard requires teachers to be competitive in the education world filled with emerging technologies every day. Teachers are supposed to master the fundamental operation of technologies. Thus, they would be more confident and comfortable dealing with new technologies they've never seen before. It's impossible to prevent the penetration of technology, so teachers have to face it, learn it and manage it. Also, being a teacher doesn't mean they only need to teach students, but the communication with colleagues and parents are also indispensable. Parents want to know how their kids perform in school and teachers can better understand the personality of students from parents' information. Then the standard also raises a requirement that teachers should be able to locate resources with digital tools, which is a necessary skill for anyone in our field.

The first artifact to demonstrate my ability in this standard is a Google Slides document on the topic of national parks in New Zealand. It was created for a web-based course to introduce the culture and society of major English-Speaking countries. I collaborated with my classmates, Adrienne, Callie, and Tammy to complete the project. I finished the major part of the project and then my classmates viewed it and offered me suggestions on how to make it more attractive to students. Google applications are great tools for collaboration among students and colleagues. We can all add new content or correct grammar errors with everyone else working on it together. Then the second artifact is an introduction website to Seesaw, a free online platform that connects students, colleagues, and parents. Teachers can use the platform to form the online community in which students can show their projects to the teacher and their parents. One of the great things about the platform is that teachers have the absolute authority to decide whether students' works can be seen by parents, colleagues or other online community, which helps to protect the safety of younger students. Then the last artifact is a video tutorial on Diigo. Diigo is a great Google Chrome extension that can be used to locate online resources, edit them into your research references and share them with group members if you want. It's more complicated than the regular bookmark function of any browsers but not difficult to operate. Students can also use the program to assist locating online resources.

future learning goals

This standard reminds me that as a teacher, one cannot be left behind especially with technology management. Students are supposed to better melt themselves into the society after graduation from school thus we must prepare them from every aspect. Technology, without any doubt, is a crucial field. They are supposed to be able to use technology innovatively to assist their research and study, which requires our teachers to do it in advance and then guide them in the correct and effective way. Besides, the standard also tells us to pay attention to the collaboration with peers, parents and the community, which totally makes sense to me. Education does not only belong to teachers. With the help and information from parents and the community, teachers can better understand the characteristics of the students and thus the instructions would be more fit for learners.
